Victory and defeat
"There's an old saying that victory has 100 fathers
and defeat is an orphan." John F. Kennedy
and defeat is an orphan." John F. Kennedy
With the April 15 Bay of Pigs invasion, the CIA hoped to do in Cuba what they had previously achieved in Iran and Guatemala: quietly overthrow a regime they found distasteful. Cuba would go differently. Although Soviet spies had compromised U.S. intelligence, most of the bungling was internal. After one embarrassing week it was over, and several top CIA officials were forced to resign. The Kennedy administration refused to give up. The Cuban Project, launched just months later, allegedly involved the use of combustible cigars and seashells to assassinate Castro. No wonder all these schemes blew up in their face.
